Mr. Mahesh Katulanda (Senior Attorney-at-Law), Reappointed as Chairman of the OMP July 3rd, 2024 Mr. Mahesh Katulanda (Senior Attorney-at-Law) has been reappointed as the Chairman of the Office on Missing Persons Sri Lanka (OMP) for three years, (2024 to 2027). Three other board members have appointed along with chairperson, namely Mrs. Sithy Dane Arfa Thasim (Provincial High Court Judge, retired), Mr. Thambiaiah Yogarajah (Labour Commissioner, Retired), and Dr. Ajith Tennakoon (Forensic expert). The Present Board Members who are Mr. P.M.W. Sampath Perera (Attorney-at-Law), Mr. Madhawa Jayawardhana (Attorney-at-Law), and Mr. Jayantha Wickramasinghe (DIG, Retired) will continue to be board members of OMP. The commencement ceremony for the new board was held on 3rd of July 2024 at the OMP premises. The Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Nihal Ranasinghe, and Additional Secretaries Mr. Rohana S. Hapugaswatte and Mr. P. Kuganathan graced the occasion.
The Office on Missing Persons has taken steps to draft and finalize the national Guideline on Tracing March 20th, 2024 At this national endeavor, a workshop on the above has been organized by the OMP on Thursday, 21st March 2024, at 9.00 am to 1.30 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI), Independence Square, Colombo 07. Extending the validity period for the Certificate of Absence (COA) to a maximum of five years. February 23rd, 2024 On February 19, 2024, under the guidance of the President's Secretary, a meeting was held. Within this session, conversations were undertaken with Office on Missing Persons (OMP) and the Registrar General (RG) department to investigate the feasibility of extending the validity period for the Certificate of Absence (COA) to a maximum of five years.
Discussion with US Embassy Officials -On February 16, 2024 February 17th, 2024 On February 16, 2024, Mr. Jayantha Wickramasinghe, a Board member of the OMP and Dr. J. Thatparan, Executive Director of the OMP convened with officials from the Embassy of the United States of America. Among them were Matthew Hinso, Political Officer, and Jennifer Hendrixson White, Senior Professional Staff Member. The purpose of the meeting was to engage in a discussion concerning the ongoing progress of the Office of Missing Persons (OMP).
